The Dangers of Traditional Mascara
You may be thinking, “Why should I DIY or buy natural mascara in the first place?” Excellent question, my friend. I mean, it just goes on your lashes, so why worry?
Just like any other average beauty product out there, the average ingredient list is riddled with horrendous chemicals. Some of them you might even know without research. This article explains what you can specifically find in mascaras.
Not gonna lie, it was a pretty scary thing to read! Formaldehyde was the most shocking ingredient to me. I mean, people use that stuff to preserve just about anything! You may be putting these chemicals in very small amounts on your body, but you’re putting it next to a very important organ, your eyes! You want to keep those as healthy as possible!
As if you didn’t need another excuse to overhaul your home and beauty products, here’s 5 More Reasons You Should Remove Harsh Chemicals from Your Home. Now let’s go over your options to make your makeup routine a little better for your health.
Welcome to the much cleaner world of DIY beauty! I’ll introduce you to how you can make your own mascara before I show you some store-bought options. That way, you’ll be able to figure out if you want to DIY or buy natural mascara.
First thing’s first, I should tell you that I’ve never actually made mascara on my own. I’ve read dozens of other blogs saying that it’s either very hard and worth it, or too hard to even try. Because of that, I’ve never bothered.
But, because I want to give you both sides of natural mascara, here’s a popular recipe that I think is pretty standard among mascara recipes. The gist of the recipe is you combine a small amount of activated charcoal, vitamin E and coconut oils, beeswax, and aloe vera gel.
I also highly recommend you get an unused mascara tube and wand instead of washing out an old one. No one has time for that! Here’s some cheap mascara tubes and wands I think you’ll like to try. It even comes with handy droppers and funnels!
The Best Store-Bought Natural Mascaras
One of the reasons I’ve never bothered to make my own mascara is that it’s one of the most accessible natural makeup products out there. If you live near any type of drugstore with its own beauty section, or any kind of health food store, you’ll most likely have easy access to one of my favorite brands for natural mascara.
I have to mention my personal favorite mascara first! Honeybee Gardens is one of my favorite natural makeup companies for several reasons. One of them being their high product quality standards. All of their products are vegan, cruelty-free, and made of completely natural ingredients.
My makeup bag is full of their stuff, but I’ll fill you in on the mascara here for now. I didn’t try their mascara until about six months ago, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back! I got the Truly Natural Mascara in espresso, because I like to have a more natural look.
One of my favorite things about Honeybee Gardens, though, is that it’s so incredibly accessible! And the prices are very reasonable. You can find all of their products on Amazon, or if you live near a Whole Foods, Natural Grocer’s, or Sprouts, you can see it in person!
That’s how I discovered Honeybee Gardens in the first place. I was in the market for some new mascara when I was shopping at Natural Grocer’s, and I found this one!
Physician’s Formula has an amazing line of natural products called Organic Wear that you can get right at your drugstore! They have foundations, eyeshadows, you name it! But their most known for their amazing line of mascaras.
Their original mascara is this cute little green tube here. This particular one I’ve never tried, but my mom loves it.
Or you can take a look at my Think Dirty App Review, where all the guesswork is taken out for you! Feel free to buy a few tubes and experiment with which one is right for you! Go for what kind of lashes you want first, but don’t be afraid to branch out a bit. Each tube has its own purpose and brush style, so you might be surprised at which one you like.
My personal favorite is the white tube, or BB Mascara. I found that my lashes looked the fullest, but what I loved the most was the style of brush. Half the brush being small and angled just right for the lower lashes? Life. Changing!
You know when you try a new shampoo and your hair feels great at first, then slowly goes back to its dull self? I feel like that happened with my lashes over time. I can’t say for sure though, maybe I’m just psyching myself out a bit.
A while back, I decided to go online to look for some new mascara options. And believe me, there are tons out there. But I stumbled across this amazing company through another green beauty blogger and fell in love.
Silk Naturals is an amazing green beauty company that offers just about anything a girl could ask for. I’ve tried their brushes, eyebrow filler, and foundation, but I want to focus on the mascara that I recently tried. You can read all about my favorite products I use regularly by Silk Naturals here.
One of the main reasons that I stuck with Physician’s Formula for so long was the price. Any other natural mascaras that I found online cost an arm and a leg to me. I know that you’ve got to pay for good quality, but I don’t like doing that with makeup (priorities, right?).
One of the things I love most about Silk Naturals is their affordability. Everything is at a fair, drugstore kind of price. So when I found their mascara was only $8.00, I figured I’d give it a shot since everything else I’ve bought has been great. Now I have a new favorite mascara!
This stuff works much better than Physician’s Formula in terms of drama, and it stays on much better too. As in I really have to work some coconut oil in my lashes to get it off! Take a look for yourself below.
I will say that I’ll miss the lower lash brush from Physician’s Formula BB Mascara, but I think I’ll live. Another thing I’ve learned is that this mascara takes a few coats to have a dramatic effect. It’s definitely not a one-and-done kind of mascara.
Another thing I love about Silk Naturals is that they really care for their ingredients and their customers. They’ve got a different eye shadow every week that you can get with a purchase, and I even got a hand-written thank-you note on my order receipt when everything came. Overall, I was very impressed!
Should You DIY or Buy Natural Mascara?
When it comes down to it, this is completely your decision. I’m obviously biased here, because I’ve never made mascara, but to each their own.
If you live in an area with lots of drugstore makeup options, chances are you have easy access to Physician’s Formula Organic Wear. It’s one of the few, if not the only, completely natural makeup line available at drugstores.
Luckily, not all online natural mascaras cost a fortune. Give Silk Naturals a try, you won’t be disappointed, I promise!
If you feel up for making some mascara, by all means go ahead and try it! And let me know if you do, I love to hear about it in the comments below!
