DIY Air Freshener is an Easy Alternative
You could simply do some research and find some store-bought alternatives, for sure. This one here gets rave reviews! I might even try it one day it sounds so good! And there are certainly other good products out there. You can find them on the Think Dirty App. It will even tell you how toxic your old air fresheners are! You can read my Think Dirty app review to learn more.
But to me, this one is so incredibly easy to make that I don’t think it’s worth the extra money spent on a new air freshener. You can use stuff you may already have around the house! Especially if you already have some essential oils on hand. If you don’t, you’re seriously missing out on some great health benefits.
It’s All In the Essential Oils
One of the key ingredients in this DIY air freshener is essential oils. So if you don’t have any, I highly recommend you get some from Rocky Mountain Oils. If you’re a regular reader, you know how much I love them. It’s not a MLM company, so you won’t deal with pushy sales people. Rocky Mountain Oils actually cares about the education of their customers on essential oils, and makes sure that satisfaction is a top priority.
Plus, their oils are one of the highest quality I’ve found! I didn’t realize how fake my old essential oils smelled until I switched. They carry everything from singles to blends to roll-ons to household products. Click here to Rocky Mountain Oil’s website! Or you can read my in-depth review of Rocky Mountain Oils to see more in-depth thoughts on them.
And don’t think that you’ll get essential oils just for this small DIY! You can use them for so much more than just one small thing. I use essential oils in my DIY lotion recipe, hair treatments, and in most of my skincare! Check out my free checklist of ingredients every natural living-lover uses to make any skincare product. You can see essential oils in action in just about everything.
My DIY Air Freshener Recipe
For this simple DIY, you will need:
- Small dark glass misting spray bottle
- 1 tablespoon witch hazel
- 15-20 drops essential oils of choice
Using the funnel, add your witch hazel into the small spray bottle. I got mine at the aromatherapy section of my grocery store for only a couple of dollars! Fill the rest of the bottle with water and add in your desired essential oils. Here are some suggestions for essential oil combinations:
- Lavender, Lemon, and Rosemary
- Peppermint and Lavender
- Lemon, Orange, and Frankincense
- Rosemary, Eukalyptus, and Orange
- Frankincense and Bergamot
My personal favorite is Lavender and Peppermint essential oils. It’s such a calming and invigorating scent! But if you have pets, I would steer clear of using them for their safety. Lemongrass and Rosemary are excellent options that are perfectly safe for cats and dogs. You can read more on essential oil safety to see how you can use essential oils properly in your home.
And that’s it! Simply spray a few times where you want to get rid of the smell and enjoy! I’ll admit I was very skeptical of this working in the first place. But I broke down and made my own recently. And it actually works! I sprayed some in my kitchen after taking out a particularly smelly trash bag with a lingering stink. After a few sprays, it went away!
The Toxic Ingredients in Air Fresheners
Ingredients in air fresheners have been proven to be considered toxic waste! It’s the same as all the other big-name products that I tell you to stay away from on Essential Moves to Wellness. Traditional air freshener sprays have ingredients like formaldehyde, phthalates, and many others that studies have proven link to cancer and other diseases. You can read more about why you should ditch harmful chemicals and try natural living.
The most common ailment from exposure to these air fresheners is lung problems. Mice showed restricted airway passage after exposure to this stuff, and even suffered severe nerve damage. Now, I understand that this was done on mice and not humans. But the acute effects on the mice show that it could be dangerous for humans.
I think we can make that assumption based on our own reactions to certain sprays. I can’t use Windex without having a coughing fit! That’s why I make my own window cleaner. When you spray a traditional air freshener, you breath those toxic chemicals into your lungs. Or they land on you and absorb into your skin. Certain tests can even reveal these chemicals linger in your bloodstream!
This PDF shows the toxicity of all big-name air fresheners, and even explains how all these harsh chemicals end up in your body and sabotage your health. You may be able to get rid of that annoying smell in your house, but you’re really adding horrible chemicals into your body instead. It’s not worth losing your family’s health over a bad smell. Luckily, there are great alternatives that work just as well, if not better!
Breathe Easy with DIY Air Freshener
I always keep my DIY air freshener in my bathroom, and I love spraying it whenever I want a quick aromatherapy boost. Especially since we have to keep our cat’s litter boxes in there. This air freshener stands up to cat odors very well and I’m pretty happy about it.
You don’t need all those fancy air fresheners to keep your house smelling good. In fact, I steer clear of the cleaning/air freshener aisle of my grocery store. It’s so full of toxic chemicals that I don’t want to be anywhere near that. There are so much better options out there, anyway.
All you need is witch hazel, water, and your favorite essential oils to take care any pesky odors in your house! Click here to get some high-quality essential oils from Rocky Mountain Oils! Stop using those harmful air fresheners in a can! You’re only filling the air with deadly chemicals that can sabotage your health. Instead, clear the air with your favorite essential oils to lift your mood.
