How to Get Rid of Stage Fright When Dancing
If you want to know how to overcome stage fright, you need to get yourself in the right state of mind. After 13 years of ballet, I’ve learned a thing or two about getting up on stage. Everyone messes up during a performance, and it can be a particularly scarring experience. Or if you haven’t, the thought of doing it can be absolutely terrifying.
Save yourself some heartache with my top four stage fright tips for dancers. My tips are a combination of methods to get yourself in the right headspace for success. I’ve also got some tips on how to always have a good performance, no matter what! It all just comes with practice.

Meditate with Aromatherapy
Don’t click away from this page if you’ve never meditated before! It’s actually much easier than you think. Meditation is one of the most under-used stage fright tips for dancers, simply because it takes some time to learn. But once you’ve mastered it, meditation can be a game-changer!
It all starts with sitting up straight in a comfortable position. Then close your eyes and focus only on your breath. It helps for me to count my breaths, like 5 counts in and 4 counts out. If you find yourself getting distracted, calmly and patiently redirect your focus on your breath. Learn more about the basics of meditation here.

Before your performance, try meditating for five minutes a day before you go to sleep. That way, you’ll know exactly what to do when performance day comes.

About an hour before a big performance, I like to sneak away for about 15 minutes to sit in a relaxed position and simply disappear. When I come back, I’m ready to go!
Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse!
You would think that this is common sense, but it’s worth mentioning.This tip is key on how to overcome stage fright. The purpose of rehearsing is so that you’re ready to perform or present with ease. So rehearse as much as you see fit!
One thing that will help you a ton is to record yourself rehearsing. That way you can watch it back take better corrections. I would do this when I first started ballet because there was so much to take in at one time. Recording yourself will help you fix any glaring mistakes that you wouldn’t catch otherwise.
Rehearsal is at the heart of learning any kind of visual art. So take your preparation time seriously! Another reason that recording yourself is so valuable is that it acts as a record if you forget choreography. I can’t tell you how many times recording a dance has saved me!
Create a Performance Preparation Routine
If you’ve spent any time in the visual arts world, you know that it can take at least two hours to get ready. Use this time wisely! I love to spend the last hour or two before a performance putting on my makeup and chatting with my friends.
You can learn how to overcome stage fright simply by making yourself mentally ready for what’s to come. I can’t tell you how much this has helped me! You can use this time to get into character, go over some steps in your head, whatever you need.
Going through the motions of a routine can allow for some much-need processing of information that will be invaluable later that day. It helps you visualize what’s about to happen, so you can mentally prepare for it and be ready! I always like to visualize myself on stage as I get ready and think positive thoughts while I play uplifting music. It’s like night and day on my mood!
Always Stick the Landing!
One of the most important performance hacks I’ve learned from ballet is to always nail the end. Why? Because that’s probably going to be the only thing the audience will remember. You can do 100 turns or talk about the cure for cancer, but if you don’t end on a good note, your audience won’t be nearly as moved.
And don’t sweat it if you don’t do something entirely correct! What most performers don’t realize is that audiences are very stupid. And I don’t mean this in a bad way. The only person that might know you slightly messed up is your teacher watching from the wings. No one else knows what you’re actually supposed to do.
Trust me, it’s incredibly liberating when you perform with this knowledge! This hack is especially useful if you it was very obvious that you messed something up. Ending on a good note despite a slip-up is good showmanship, and your audience will love you for that. So no matter what happens, put a smile on your face, stand up tall, and own that ending pose!

Honestly, one of the biggest things that helped me overcome stage fright was time. It took me years to learn the things that I’m telling you now. The more time you spend onstage, the more that gut-wrenching feeling will go away.
