Sound Waves and Your Brain with Binaural Beats

So what are binaural beats, exactly? Binaural literally means “having or relating to two ears,” according to this article. How binaural beats work lie within the definition. Two continuous sound frequencies are sent through headphones, with one tone in one ear, and a different tone in your other ear.

easy meditationThe mathematical difference between the two tones makes your brain register a different tone altogether at a completely different frequency. I’m horrible at math, so you don’t have to worry about this part too much. You just need to know that the frequency you see on any binaural beat tracks is the difference between two frequencies.

For example, I could find a binaural beat track that plays at a frequency of 300 Hz in my left ear, and 350 Hz in my right ear. The difference between the frequencies is 50, meaning that my brain would recognize a tone at 50 Hz instead.

There’s even a whole branch of therapy emerging dedicated to binaural beats! Right now, binaural beats therapy is listening to a track for a certain amount of time with no distractions. This has been proven to lower stress and anxiety while increasing focus and attention span.

What do these tones have to do with mediation?

When your brain experiences sounds at such small frequencies, it naturally enters a state of deep meditation! When you enter deep meditation, your brain’s activity changes dramatically. Studies have shown that activity in the parietal lobe, the part of your brain in charge of sensory awareness, drops to its minimal level.

In other words, being able to shut off all awareness of the physical world is what makes people feel one with themselves and the universe when they meditate. Instead of sitting for hours trying to block out the world, you can listen to binaural beats for a few minutes. Your brain will easily slip into your desired state, with little to no work on your part!

This is an especially crucial tool to have for those who are new to meditation or are too stressed out to meditate. I’ve certainly had days where my brain is so scattered that there’s no way I could simply focus on my breathing. But I’ve found some great resources over the years that have done wonders for me that I share in my meditation for beginners post.

Choosing the Right Frequency

easy meditationThe state you want to achieve depends very heavily on the frequency you listen to. Binaural  beats meditation is amazing not only for relaxation, but for sleep and memory retention as well! You can pick a wavelength based on your desired mental state from my handy-dandy graphic here. Don’t forget to pin is for later!

Just bear in mind that the listed Hz frequencies are the mathematical difference between the wavelength of two different tones. Think of it this way; the higher the brain activity, the higher the frequency. If you want to completely shut the world out while catching some deep sleep, go for the lowest frequency you can find.

While you’ve got that going, take your deep sleep endeavors to the next level with Natural Ways to Fall Asleep Fast that No One Talks AboutOr, if you need to study for a test, go for a frequency around 100 Hz or so. You can make your mental focus even better with 5 Easy Ways to Improve Concentration Right Now.

Don’t be afraid to do some experimenting to find the frequency that works best for you! You may find that you respond to a higher frequency for sleep, or vice versa. I personally love higher frequencies for studying and getting stuff done around Essential Moves to Wellness.

Where to Find Binaural Beat Tracks

You can find binaural beat tracks just about anywhere there’s music available. It’s usually under the relaxing/meditation section. Just about any relaxing meditation music will have the same effect, but if you really want the therapeutic benefits of binaural beats, make sure the the track or album specifically says “binaural beats.”

One place in particular that I think is worth checking out is Amazon Music Unlimited. You can sign up for a free trial to see if you really like it. I searched for and found dozens of options for binaural beats. There were options for sleep, study, productivity, you name it! Click the banner below to get started.

Some Free Binaural Beats Options to Try

While the trial is free, I get it if you want to try completely free options. The best place to find free binaural beat meditation tracks is definitely YouTube. All of the tracks I listen to can be found on there, and the names are often very helpful with what I want to accomplish.

Try to find videos that include the frequency in their title, so you know exactly what you’re getting. The first binaural beat video I came across was this one down below. In fact, I’m listening to it right now as I write this post. The frequency for this video is 10 Hz, which is perfect for getting a task like writing done and dusted.

Update: I still go back to this video when I want something simple and relaxing, over 2 years since I first published this post. There’s no tune or melody that will get stuck in my head. And it does what it’s supposed to do!

Another great perk is that some videos go on for three, four, or even eight hours at a time. You can use a video to time a study session, or have one running all night long while you sleep. The options are endless! You can pick any kind of tone that fits your needs and your personal preferences.

**Pro tip** If you want to have a video run for all or part of the night, make sure that the video is downloaded or all the advertisements are gone. I played a track during a particularly stressful night, and right when I was about to fall asleep, the video ended and a loud advertisement came on.

Three hours of binaural beats meditation (along with my sanity) went flying out the window! I was so mad at myself for not thinking of it earlier. So the lesson of this anecdote is that sometimes it might be worth it to get the paid version of something to avoid advertisements. Some other great options are spotify and iTunes. Trust me, this isn’t something you want to lose your sanity over!

Final Thoughts on Binaural BeatsIs meditation proving to be a lot harder than you thought? There's help for that! Binaural beats meditation does the work of getting your brain in a meditative state for you, leaving you to relax and unwind. #meditation #binauralbeats #mentalhealth #mindfulness

I personally don’t always have headphones on when I listen to binaural beats meditation. Sometimes its nice just to have it on in the background. But if you need its full effects, headphones or earbuds must be worn at all times. You can even hear the difference if you take out one earbud but leave in the other. You’ll hear something totally different!

Next time you feel like you can’t focus, you need to calm down, or you desperately need a good night’s sleep, give binaural beats meditation a try. You might be surprised at how much your body relaxes just from a few unique sound waves.

The world of mindfulness and meditation may seem like a place that’s not for you, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone deserves to unplug and take care of their mind every now and then. You just need to find a method that works for you and your lifestyle.
