Why Do I Need an All Natural Shaving Cream?
If you’re still on the edge about making the switch to a natural lifestyle, or if this is your first time here, you need to give natural living a try! It’s nothing super complex. Natural living is actually a journey to your healthiest self through eliminating harsh chemicals in your every day products.
You may be wondering, “What’s wrong with my every day products? People wouldn’t put harsh chemicals in them that could hurt me, would they?” Oh, how I wish that was true.
The truth is, there is little to no regulation on what goes into our home and beauty products. As a result, companies will put absolutely anything in them to obtain a desired outcome. And once you become educated on what you put on (and in!) your body every day, you’ll want to switch too.
While our everyday home and beauty products my seem totally fine, they are riddled with hundreds of ingredients that can cause us serious harm. Shaving creams in particular contain propolene gycol, which is often found in brake fluid and antifreeze (source). Do you want to slather stuff you find in your car all over your skin? Didn’t think so.
I will say that the U.S. has more work to be done than other countries in terms of harsh ingredients. The E.U. has banned certain ingredients from reaching store shelves (source). But this only goes so far as well, because customers don’t want to deal with a limited product selection in the E.U..
There’s also one other dirty ingredient that I want to especially highlight in this post, because it’s rampant in traditional shaving creams.
The Dangerous F-Bomb
Some shaving creams also come with the dreaded F-word in the natural living community. Fragrance. Fragrance is one of the most dangerous things to find in an ingredient list, because there’s no way to know what that “fragrance” actually is.
If it smells like roses, that means there’s just roses in there, right? No so much. There’s probably nothing even close to real roses in that product whatsoever!
Just about anything can be thrown together to create that lovely smell to your favorite products. The problem is, over 100 ingredients can be in that mixture called “fragrance,” and they won’t be named on the ingredient list at all!
Plus, these mystery ingredients are often found to be toxic waste that I know you wouldn’t put anywhere near your skin (source). Basically, stay far away from any product that has “fragrance” on the ingredient list. It’s the perfect way for companies to hide their most dangerous ingredients.
So What’s a Girl (or Guy!!) to Do About Shaving Creams with Sensitive Skin?
There are great alternatives out there! I personally prefer to use my own kind of shaving cream. It’s really a moisturizing exfoliator, but it works just as well, if not better, than traditional shaving cream.
But you’re here for all natural shaving products! So here’s a list of my top three shaving creams from companies I trust. I also want to quickly say that I’m not affiliated with these products. I’m not big enough for an amazon affiliate! This is just my unpaid opinion.
100% Pure is one of the top all natural companies out there, with one of the biggest collection of natural products you can trust. Seriously, it’s one of the few companies that I know where I can just pick a product and not worry about searching for it on the Think Dirty app.
So I was thrilled to find that 100% Pure has an all natural shaving cream. I’ll admit that pink grapefruit seaweed doesn’t sound like the best combination, but hey, at least you know there’s no crazy fragrance. Seaweed is actually very good for skin’s moisture and elasticity.
To me, 100% Pure is a little on the pricey end of the spectrum in the natural beauty community. But you really do get what you pay for. They have rave reviews for just about all of their products, and 100% Pure has everything from makeup to hair care.
So if you want to splurge and give your skin a break, I’d recommend giving the Pink Grapefruit Seaweed Shaving Cream a try. Don’t worry if it’s too much for your wallet. We’re just getting warmed up!
Dr. Bronner’s castile soap is a must-have for a natural lifestyle! But did you know that Dr. Bronner’s makes so much more than soap? As we know, castile soap is an incredibly useful ingredient to keep around the house, because it can be used in just about anything. Shaving cream included.
Dr. Bronner’s knows this very well, so they also offer several products with their magic castile soap as the main ingredient. The organic shaving soap is one of these products. It’s my personal favorite shaving cream for several reasons.
One of the main reasons I love this shaving soap so much for sensitive skin is the ingredient list is so simple. The base ingredients are castile soap and a collection of nourishing carrier oils. This is also the biggest bang for your buck, so you don’t have to feel guilty for throwing down $20.00 on shaving cream.
The organic shaving soap is also one of the most accessible products you can find. If you hate online shopping, no worries! You can find this shaving soap at just about any health food store. You can even pick which essential oil scent you would like. It comes in lavender, mint, tea tree, lemongrass, and unscented.
Just be careful that you don’t fall down the hole and use castile soap in everything. It’s great and all, but you can also use castile soap very wrong, very easily. You can see what I mean in a post I wrote all about how to use castile soap in home and beauty.
Some people can be a bit picky with castile soap, and I totally get that. It’s not meant for everyone. Avalon Organics is another good company that you can find in the beauty section of almost every health food store as well.
They’re most known for their shampoos and conditioners, but they have just about everything else for beauty products! I’ve seen very picky natural living gurus turn their noses up at some of their products, but if it works and it’s at the level of natural you’re comfortable with, then go for it!
If you’re not big into your skincare being scented, no matter how natural, this is the best option for you. Yes, it’s made with aloe, but there’s no additives just for scent alone.
Sometimes, sensitive skin just doesn’t like anything scented at all, and that’s okay. The aloe will work great to calm any inflamed skin from shaving. What’s great too, the aloe will help prevent razor bumps or razor burn from forming. But if it’s already too late and you’ve got a terrible case of razor bumps, I’ve got you covered.
If you want something that’s cheap, accessible, and easy to use, the aloe unscented cream shave is a great option! This is also a great unisex option, or if you want something that’s super simple and doesn’t have an obnoxious scent.
Sensitive Skin Doesn’t Have to Ruin Your Life!
You know the pain of your sensitive skin not being able to handle shaving without some kind of shaving cream. But that shaving cream is so horrible for your health! Try switching to a natural shaving cream instead. Your skin will thank you for it!
There is little to no regulation on what goes into our home and beauty products that we use every day. Even the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has admitted that they have hardly any control over what companies decide to put into their products.
And sadly, most companies only want your money. So they will put whatever it takes in their products to make sure it works. Even if it compromises your health in the process. So get yourself educated on what’s out there that’s safe. I’ll be right here if you need anything, too!
Start out small and simple to avoid overwhelm and switch to a natural shaving cream. You have options from the higher end of the spectrum in terms of price, to a much more affordable option that you could find in your own health food store. It might take a few experiments, but I promise you’ll find a good shaving cream that will have your skin calmed and glowing!
