Why is Organic Lipstick Better?

Organic lipsticks are better for your lips because they are made from organic, plant-based ingredients, while traditional lipsticks are full of nasty chemicals.

Ingredients you should stay away from include:

  • Alcohol – can be listed as ethanol or ethyl alcohol, and dries out your lips.
  • Parabens and phthalates – hormone disruptors
  • Propylene glycol – can cause dermatitis.
  • Petroleum jelly and paraffin wax –  derived from crude oil.
  • Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) – a known carcinogen.

Plus, synthetic dyes are used to color traditional lipsticks. 🛑

These dyes are often made from coal tar or aluminum and can be contaminated with heavy metals. Any dye with a number in front of it, such as red #40, or a colorant listed as a “lake”, are linked to a multitude of health problems, such as hyperactivity and neurological problems.

And, of course, traditional lipstick can list “fragrances”, which do not need to be disclosed in the ingredient list, because they are deemed a ‘trade secret’. So, companies can hide nasty ingredients behind the synthetic fragrances.

What is Natural Lipstick Made Of?

Natural lipstick and organic lipstick are not one and the same.

Natural lipsticks are made from herbs, fruits, and plants. They may also contain real fruit pigments and natural mineral pigments. And they use botanical butters, oils, and waxes, to help form the lipstick.

Organic lipsticks also use natural ingredients, but the difference is that organic lipstick uses only organically sourced ingredients. 🌿 Natural lipsticks may use plant-based ingredients that have been grown with pesticides and other chemicals.

nontoxic makeup

So, organic is natural, but natural is not necessarily organic.

Either way, they are both full of good, healthy ingredients for your skin. The butters and oils help the lipstick glide across your skin, while keeping your lips hydrated. Zinc oxide is often a key ingredient that repairs the skin and is antibacterial.

As someone with perpetually chapped lips, these natural lipsticks are the only ones that won’t dry my lips out even more than they already are. And that’s thanks to the natural moisturizing ingredients.

And antioxidants are used as preservatives in non-toxic lipsticks. With that said, it is important to note that some non-toxic lipsticks do list artificial colorants in their ingredient list, such as lakes.

But unless you use something like beetroot powder to color the lipstick, it’s something you have to live with.

Lipsticks that still get a passing grade in the clean beauty world have less than 1% artificial dyes in the product, so it’s really up to you whether or not you’re okay with that. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Most of the lipsticks on this list use only natural colorants, but those that do have synthetic dyes use less than 1% in their product.

Do Natural Lipsticks Fade Faster than Non-Natural Lipsticks?

You may be surprised to learn that most clean lipsticks have the same staying power as traditional lipsticks! Especially the lipsticks on this list.

Even if your lipstick doesn’t stay all day, if you are trying to go clean, you may opt to reapply periodically throughout the day. You win some, you lose some.

Still, if you are worried about your lipstick fading, opt for a velvet matte formula. They typically stay longer.

Which Type of Lipstick Looks Natural?

If you want a lipstick that looks natural, then nudes are your best bet. 👍

Nude shades are designed to look like your natural color, but you have to be careful when shopping for nude lipstick. There are many different shades of nude, and the shade that works best for your skin tone will depend on your skin’s undertones.

For example, if you have yellow undertones, a pink nude will not look nude on your lips. It’ll look pink. And if you have pink undertones, an orangish brown nude will look, well, orange or brown on your lips.

I’ll admit that I still haven’t fully mastered it. I’m an ingredient expert! Not a beauty guru. 🙅🏼‍♀️

The lipstick that will look the most natural on you will be a nude that matches your skin’s undertones. So, if you have pink skin tones, opt for a pink nude.

What to Look for in a Natural Lipstick

I think the first thing we all look for, when shopping for lipstick, is the color. We want fun and feminine colors that make us feel gorgeous!

But aside from that, here’s what to look for:

  • Natural waxes – waxes like candelilla and carnauba are used to mold the lipsticks.
  • Nourishing oils – castor oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, mango seed butter, cocoa butter, shea butter, and avocado butter, all help the lipstick to glide across your lips.
  • Emollients – sunflower and safflower oils provide a protective film on your lips, trapping in moisture and keeping your lips soft.
  • Antioxidants – rosemary extract, elderberry extract, and Vitamin E act as natural preservatives.

When you look at the ingredient list, look for botanical ingredients listed first, before other ingredients. This means the lipstick is made mostly from these botanical ingredients.

Final Thoughts on Natural Lipstick

Clean lipsticks are so much better for your lips because they don’t contain any harsh ingredients. Instead, they are made from botanical ingredients that nourish and care for your lips!

Plus, contrary to popular belief, non-toxic lipstick has staying power!

So, look for a lipstick made from plant butters and oils, with as little synthetic dyes as possible. If you want to go completely 100% natural, the lipsticks with fruit and mineral pigments, such as 100% Pure, are a great choice.

No matter which you choose, you can’t go wrong with any of the lipsticks on this list!
