What is The Choosy Chick?
The Choosy Chick is a one-stop-shop marketplace full of clean beauty brands that have undergone rigorous testing and research to ensure quality and safety. This gem of a website was created when the founders discovered how toxic the cosmetic industry is, while the FDA has little to no control over what goes into our products.
Let me tell you, that was a harsh wakeup call for me too when I first learned about the dark side of the cosmetics industry! And that’s one of the things I appreciate the most about The Choosy Chick. They have a whole Learning Tab on their website dedicated to helping you understand the many faults of the cosmetics industry.
You can learn about the standards The Choosy Chick holds up to each product, what certifications mean, how shady practices in the cosmetics industry work, and even how to reduce everyday toxins in your home! Speaking of which, The Choosy Chick’s standards are ones that every company should go by when it comes to our health.
The Choosy Chick’s Clean Beauty Standards
The Choosy Chick does what every big-name company does not; they choose what products to put on their virtual shelves based on a very strict ingredient standard. Absolutely no products with these ingredients will be shown on their website. Ever. And I really appreciate that as a clean beauty lover.
The Big Baddies page on their website is a little intense, so I would recommend reading through a few ingredients at a time and taking a break in between. But it’s so worth it to really read everything and take it all in! You’ll be a much more informed consumer as a result! You can also see a more comprehensive list of everything The Choosy Chick does not allow on their Standards Page.
Those are just about all of the ingredients that I myself don’t allow myself to come into contact with, so I can shop around with complete peace of mind. Plus, I get to expose myself to new brands and products I wouldn’t have found on my own! I’ve got my favorite products from The Choosy Chick down below that you can check out as well.
My Favorite Products from The Choosy Chick
The Choosy Chick Review you didn’t know you needed wouldn’t be complete without a few product recommendations! They have everything from makeup to skin care to beauty, so I’ll try to mention a favorite product in each category. First up, I have to mention my favorite sun block brand!
Badger Balm Sunblock and Bug Spray
Badger Balm is a great brand for all things sun and bug protection! I’ve been using their sunblocks for years and I love all the different options. My personal favorite sunblock is the Clear Zinc Oxide Sport Sunscreen for days when I know I’m going to be sweating or swimming outside for long periods of time.
Badger also makes great tinted sunscreens for your face. Their Rose Face Tinted Sunscreen is divine! I’ll fall in love with anything extra hard if it has roses in it. There’s a sunscreen for just about anyone and everyone who wants a little extra sun protection.
I just discovered Badger’s Anti-Bug Shake and Spray this past summer and fell in love! I used it on a camping trip, as well as any nighttime outings where I knew there would be bugs. This spray kept the bugs at a minimum and my skin didn’t feel sensitized or irritated.
I do want to add, though, that you should do a patch test of the bug spray before trying it for a night. My friend learned that she has an aversion to citrus oils when she tried it one night and ended up breaking out in a mild skin rash. I’ve never heard of anyone else having an aversion, but it’s better safe than sorry!
Schmidt’s Deodorant
I’ve been using natural deodorants for years, but this is the first brand I discovered that’s actually worth talking about! Deodorant is one of the first personal care products you should switch out because of all the heavy metals that can filter into your lymph nodes. Yes, traditional deodorants are notorious for being full of aluminum!
I’ve used plenty of deodorants since I started my clean beauty journey in 2012, but none of them did the job quite right. Some simply wouldn’t work, while others wouldn’t smell like they promised or left my pits feeling weird. But Schmidt’s deodorant is the first one that actually does everything it says!
These deodorants come in aromatherapy-style scents, with the Lavender and Sage scent being one of my favorites! There are some great unisex scents as well, like Cedarwood and Juniper. I highly recommend playing around with the scents to find your favorite!
100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara
There are a ton of natural mascaras to pick from, and they’re all great. But I love 100% Pure’s mascara because it can help to drastically help to improve the look and health of your lashes. It’s amazing what can happen when you stop with the toxic chemicals!
I’ll agree with some reviews that this mascara isn’t the kind that gives you a false lash effect, but I’ve always been a more natural girl anyway. I have tried to build layers of this mascara with great results in the past! I’ve even worn it in my natural stage makeup kit.
Did you know that the dark dye used in traditional mascaras is coal tar? Yep, you’re actually putting a little bit of heavy black tar next to your eyeballs every day. 100% Pure’s mascara uses pigments from black tea instead, making it truly a mascara created from nature. Definitely worth the switch!
Green and Gorgeous Organics Dry Shampoo
I love a good dry shampoo! But when I found out how damaging traditional dry shampoos in an aerosol can are, I quit cold turkey. Yeah, you’re getting rid of that excess oil on your scalp, but you’re also covering that sensitive skin with toxic chemicals that can make your produce even more oils!
Try a safer alternative that still gets the job done right! Certain powders can absorb your scalp’s excess oils without compromising its health. Dry shampoo powders by Green and Gorgeous Organics are a great alternative! They’re composed of arrowroot powder, healing clay, and essential oils to help keep your scalp clean and happy.
My personal favorite is the Lavender and Bergamot Dry Shampoo. And how cute is their little kabuki brush you can get to even out the dry shampoo’s distribution?? I love to put this on my roots the day after washing to go longer in between washes so I can have as little damage to my ends as possible. I owe much of my hair’s success to good dry shampoo!
The Pros of Shopping at The Choosy Chick
There are so many wonderful pros of shopping at The Choosy Chick! Some are pretty obvious, and there are other pros I want to highlight for certain people in certain stages of their clean beauty journey. Some of the most noteworthy pros of The Choosy Chick review includes:
- Peace of mind while shopping. This is the number one reason why I recommend you shop at The Choosy Chick. They have some of the best standards when it comes to allowing nontoxic beauty products on their website, and I love them to pieces for it. Plus, if I’m in the market for a new product, I can search their site and find great choices without having to do a bunch of research first.
- Great options for families. The Choosy Chick offer more than just products for women! They have a great selection for men and babies as well as mothers. And if you have a teen or tween that’s just starting to dabble in beauty, this is the site for them! There are plenty of starter products for them to try and find their own style.
- Noteworthy certifications. The last thing I absolutely love about The Choosy Chick is that they have a “Noteworthy Certifications” tab in the info section of every product. It gives you a very easy-to-understand look at what the company stands for, as well as toxic ingredients that are purposely left out. Take a look at Acure’s Ultra Hydrating Shampoo, for example. You can see under the noteworthy certifications tab that it’s free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, petrolatum, and formaldehyde.
The Con of Shopping at The Choosy Chick
The only con that I’ve found with several online clean beauty marketplaces is that they don’t carry every single product that a company makes. I can totally understand why they wouldn’t carry everything from brands like 100% Pure because they have pretty much everything you could think of.
Now don’t go thinking that the products The Choosy Chick doesn’t include are toxic!! I’ve checked to be sure, and most products that aren’t in The Choosy Chick’s lineup are totally fine. An example of this is Badger Balm recently came out with a lavender scented sunscreen (You can see it here on Amazon), but it’s not on The Choosy Chick’s lineup for Badger Balm. I know for a fact that the lavender sunscreen is totally fine. The bottom line is just because it’s not on The Choosy Chick, doesn’t mean it’s toxic.
I think it has more to do with production agreements than anything else. If I was the head of my own company, I wouldn’t want another website selling all of my stuff! You gotta save some of it for yourself, you know? But that’s only my educated guess.
Final Thoughts on The Choosy Chick Review
The Choosy Chick is truly a diamond in the rough when it comes to finding clean beauty products you can trust. They have some of the highest standards I’ve come across with choosing products to add to their roster, so you can shop with total peace of mind knowing that what you’re looking at is safe to use on your body.
I also love that The Choosy Chick has such thorough information pages for each product! There’s a description, directions, reviews, and even noteworthy certifications so you know exactly what this product is trying to avoid.
And you can always catch a good clean beauty sale on The Choosy Chick! There’s a little “Sale” tab you can check out, plus they always have great sales on holidays. Otherwise, you can snag free shipping on orders over $75. And believe me, if it’s your first time on the site or you’re just starting to dabble in clean beauty, it’s very easy to get to that point.
If you’re in the market for some new green beauty products, you need to check out The Choosy Chick! They’re great for introducing you to new green skin care brands and clean beauty finds that you normally wouldn’t discover on your own. And there’s nothing better than supporting indie beauty brands!
