What is a Facial Roller and Why is It So Important in Skin Care?

Facial rollers have actually been around for thousands of years, with the first known documentation of stone rolling for skin care found in ancient China. Other civilizations, like the Egyptian and Maya, also used jade as a tool for muscle massage and anti-aging skin care.

It seems like jade was the main stone of choice for the elite of ancient civilizations, although rose quartz was also used. The cooling feeling of the stone along with the stimulation of blood flow and lymphatic drainage was a benefit that the ancients caught on to pretty quickly.

There are several different kinds of stone rollers meant for different parts of the body, but for the sake of this article’s length I’m only going to focus on facial rollers. There are other stone tools meant for the face as well, like gua sha stone tools, but those are topics for another day.

A facial roller is a skin care tool that consists of a small handle with a larger stone that rolls around a thick metal wire at one end, and a smaller stone roller at the other end. The different size of the two stones is meant for different parts of the face. For example, the smaller stone is for under your eyes and the larger stone is meant for your cheeks.

As for how you use a facial roller, there’s a whole science behind the method! But that could also be an entire post on its own. If you’re new to facial rolling and want the low-down, here’s a video that is super quick to the point on how to do it!

Now that we understand what a facial roller is and how to use one properly, let’s get into the stuff you’re really here for! There are benefits for both jade vs. rose quartz roller products, so let’s break down the benefits of jade first.

The Benefits of a Jade Roller

You will find that jade vs. rose quartz roller products have generally the same benefits. However, there are a couple of notable differences. First, let’s get into the benefits of both jade and rose quartz rollers.

  • Relieves deep muscle tension in the face. Have you ever felt your face, especially your jaw, tighten up in response to stress? I know I certainly have! A jade roller can get deep into the facial tissue to help relieve tight muscles and let your face relax a bit.
  • De-puffs under eyes and soothes skin. The cool feel of the stone combined with the gentleness of pushing away all that water retention can do wonders for your face! A jade or rose quartz roller will soothe irritated skin. And if you’re notorious for waking up with puffy eyes, this will be your savior!
  • Stimulates lymphatic drainage. If you’re not too familiar with the lymphatic system, it’s super important! Think of it as the garbage collector of your body. Stimulating lymphatic drainage in your skin increases circulation and makes your body detox itself faster than usual.

Those are the three major benefits of facial rollers in general, no matter which stone you go with. They’re pretty great if you’re looking to step up your skin care routine! However, there are a few notable differences between jade vs. rose quartz roller tools.

More specifically, a jade roller is a slightly softer stone by nature, so if you don’t like the idea of rolling cold hard stone on your face, jade is a great way to ease yourself into facial rolling. It’s also not as smooth as most facial rolling stones, so people have reported that their skin feels much tighter and lifted. There’s only anecdotal evidence to support this, however.

If you’re looking to invest in a jade roller, this one from The Detox Market has great value! It’s not outrageously priced, and it comes in jade, opal, or rose quartz. Rose Quartz Roller Benefits

Now onto one of my personal favorite stones, rose quartz! I’ll admit that I’m not into crystal healing at all (no hate to anyone that is!), but I’ve always felt drawn to this stone. I think it’s because it’s pink, and I’ve always been drawn to soft pink-colored things. Hence the pink rose for my logo!

Rose quartz has all of the same benefits I listed above for jade, with some additional things worth noting:

  • It’s great for wrinkles. The properties of the stone tighten the skin in a gentle way, making it ideal for both smoothing and preventing wrinkles. The ancient Egyptians used rose quartz frequently to keep themselves looking fresh!
  • It’s ideal for sensitive skin. Rose quartz can stay cooler for longer, which makes it great for soothing seriously damaged and inflamed skin. In addition to daily use, a rose quartz roller would also work great on conditions like rosacea and sunburn.

Rose quartz is much harder and cooler than jade, so you can do with that what you will. One thing worth noting is whenever I’ve held a rose quartz stone, the cool feeling always made me feel calmer. This stone is also associated with unconditional love and healing.

Does a Rose Quartz Roller Really Work?

I think it’s definitely worth trying! There isn’t too much evidence to support all of these claims in the scientific world. But there is evidence to support that facial massage is good for the skin. (source) I like to approach claims with little scientific evidence as a complete skeptic. And the only thing science says so far is that facial massage of any kind is good for you.

I can agree with this, and it’s probably why facial rollers work so well. The massage combined with the lymphatic drainage and the cooling feeling of the stone itself would make a nice skin care treatment. That’s the extent to which I think rose quartz rollers really work. And I think that’s enough to actually give it a try!

At the very least, it’s certainly a pretty addition to your bathroom cabinet. I think that’s one of the main reasons why facial rollers have made a huge comeback in recent years. We’re all about aesthetic on the internet, and a rose quartz or jade roller add the perfect amount of luxury and whimsy.

The Best Rose Quartz Roller Brand

There are so many brands that sell facial rollers! I personally think there isn’t a single “best brand” out there. Just go for one that won’t break the bank and has great reviews. Also make sure that you’re buying a real rose quartz roller, if you can!

If you’re not sure whether or not you have a real rose quartz roller, check the feeling of the stone. I’m sure you can tell the difference between stone and glass! If you’re still not sure, check the stone for bubbles. That’s a telltale sign that your rose quartz roller is acutally made of glass.

You can also check the stone’s surface for irregularities. If the surface is a bit too perfect, then it’s possibly made of glass. A real rose quartz roller will be smooth and cool to the touch, but you should also be able to pick out little irregularities within the stone.

I highly recommend this rose quartz roller from Amazon! It’s super cheap and is verified to be made of 100% real rose quartz. You may be skeptical of the price being so low, but the reviews speak for themselves. It even comes with a little gua sha stone to try out!

Jade vs. Rose Quartz Roller | What Stone is Best for Facial Rollers?

I see no problem with getting both jade and rose quartz and seeing which one you gravitate to! They both provide the same benefits of depuffing, detoxing, and tightening skin. But if you only want to get one and can’t decide, here are some things to consider:

A Rose Quartz Roller is Good For:

  • Smoothing and preventing wrinkles
  • Is cooler to the touch and stays cooler for longer
  • Lasts longer—It’s a very tough, hard stone

A Jade Roller is Good For:

  • Providing a tighter contour to the face
  • Is often cheaper than rose quartz
  • Doesn’t last as long—The stone can sometimes be too soft

Why is Rose Quartz More Expensive than Jade?

It’s really not so much as the quality of rose quartz is better than jade, but the fact that the process of making rose quartz rollers are much harder. Like I’ve said before, rose quartz is a much harder stone than jade, which means that it’s much harder to carve.

Making facial rollers is a lot more challenging than you think! It usually takes a team of expert artisans to make those fancy little tools. Since it takes more work from an artisan to create a rose quartz roller, they need to be paid more. It’s as simple as that.

Not to mention rose quartz can shatter if it’s not carved just right! It’s true that rose quartz is more durable than jade but carving the stone so it will be more prone to accidental drops takes a lot of time and skill. Rose quartz is very hard and brittle before it’s carved into that smooth little sphere. So all that extra hard work with a small margin for error makes the price go up a bit compared to jade rollers.

Final Thoughts on Jade vs. Rose Quartz Roller Benefits

Whether you decide to go with a rose quartz or a jade roller, your skin will love you for it! I love facial rolling because it’s a nice little treat for your skin to help unwind and release some tension from the day. I don’t know about you, but I tend to hold a lot of tension in my jaw! And a rose quartz facial roller is the perfect solution.

I personally prefer rose quarts rollers over jade rollers because I love the feeling of the coolness of the rose quartz. I don’t know how else to describe it, but it makes my skin feel calmer, tighter, and brighter. The sheer feeling of that cold stone on my skin makes me feel so much more grounded than a jade roller. But like I said, to each their own!

A jade roller is a good option if you’re on a tight budget, you want to focus on tightening up your skin, or you simply want more jade in your life! And rose quartz is great for anti-aging and sensitive skin. I would simply take your own situation into account and make a decision based on that. Just keep in mind that there’s no wrong answer here!
