Do you dream of long, luscious hair? But don’t want to wait over a year to get it? Using essential oils for hair growth will noticeably accelerate your progress!

All it takes is a little bit of carrier oils along with your essential oils as your weapon of choice. And it doesn’t have to be a time-consuming process, either! You can fit it in with your shower routine no problem.

Which Oil is Best for Hair Growth and Thickness?

There’s no “holy grail” essential oil that will help with hair growth. In fact, there are several! There are so many essential oils for fast hair growth that do more than just make your hair longer.

Some essential oils also help with scalp health, like dryness or too much oil production. Others also help to invigorate and soothe the scalp, which is what results in faster growth.

Fast hair growth oil is so personalized and easy to make, that I’ve got a whole list of the best essential oils for hair growth down below. Based on what your hair and scalp needs at this point in time, you can pick one or two oils to make your own concoction.

No matter what option you pick from this essential oil hair growth recipe, you can’t forget the importance of carrier oils!

Carrier Oils for Hair Growth

What exactly is a carrier oil? They are absolutely crucial for using essential oils safely. Carrier oils are usually made in the same way as essential oils, except they are made from seeds and nuts instead of the usual herbs that make very potent oils like lavender.

Some common carrier oils include:

Any of these carrier oils would be great for hair growth oil. But you can certainly find your favorites.

For me personally, I don’t like how heavy olive and coconut oil feels on my fine hair. My favorite carrier oil is a tie between jojoba and sweet almond because they are both extremely light and absorb into your hair and skin quickly.

If you have thicker hair that tends to be on the dry side, olive and coconut oils would do it a lot of good! Medium hair would love avocado and grapeseed oil, or any of the other oils on this list.

Castor Oil and Essential Oils for Hair Growth

Now, castor oil is another carrier that deserves its own section because it may or may not be a game-changer for your hair growth journey.

Castor oil is made from castor beans (They’re actually seeds for this plant) and it has had several uses for thousands of years. Castor oil can be a laxative, fight acne and fungus, and even balance hormones with castor oil packs!

But you’re here for castor oil and hair growth. This carrier oil has been proven to be a major weapon in a person’s hair growth arsenal. But it comes at a price.

Castor oil is one of, if not the most, bulky carrier oil out there. And it can be hard to wash out, depending on your hair type.

If you have fine or even medium weight hair, I don’t recommend castor oil for this hair growth serum. I have tried hair masks and treatments with castor oil on my fine, silky hair, and it only created problems. It took three washes to get it all out, and even then, my hair still felt weighed down.

Castor oil is a favorite among the African American community, because it is perfect for thick, naturally dry hair. Any other hair type is better off without it. And don’t worry, your hair will still grow super-fast!

How to Mix Essential Oils for Hair Growth

The best way to mix these two oils is for the carrier oil to dilute the potency of the essential oil. You should never apply straight essential oils to your skin, as many people have found through trips to the doctor.

Like I said in my essential oil safety post, the best dilution rate for hair oil is at 2%, or 10-12 drops for every ounce of carrier oil. So if you have a two-ounce bottle, you could add 20-24 drops of your essential oil of choice.

And you can totally mix and match which essential oils you want to use! You could do two or even three oils for a desired effect. Just make sure that the total number of drops adds up to 2% of the bottle’s content.

Also keep in mind, where you buy your essential oils matter! My favorite company is REVIVE Essential oils. I love REVIVE because they work with some of the most respected names in the essential oil industry, they’re not an MLM, and they have some of the cheapest prices I’ve come across!

But which essential oil should you use? I’ve got you covered. Check out the list below of some of my favorite essential oils for hair growth, starting with one you can find anywhere.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil does way more than just calm you! The relaxing yet invigorating qualities of lavender act as a one-two punch in terms of hair growth.

One of the easiest tricks for fast hair growth is to invigorate the scalp by making more blood flow up there. Lavender may be calming, but it has an invigorating undertone to it. And that will bring much-needed blood to your scalp to wake it up.

lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil is also very soothing to the skin. If you’re struggling with an especially sensitive scalp, have dandruff, or you want to improve your general scalp health, this is a great option!

Lastly, lavender is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, meaning that it can help your scalp stay cleaner for longer. Yes, your wet hair can develop bacteria or fungus while it air dries! But lavender prevents all that nasty stuff from forming in the first place.

Rosemary

I absolutely love rosemary for hair growth! In fact, I even used it in this apple cider vinegar hair rinse, and it worked wonders. Rosemary oil is one of the most invigorating essential oils on this list, which makes it great for hair growth.

rosemary essential oil

And not only that, but rosemary has been used for thousands of years as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent. It has very similar properties to lavender, but rosemary is better at treating an angry or inflamed scalp.

I will caution you, though, that this essential oil can be very potent. It might be a bit too much for your skin to handle if you apply it without a carrier oil. The smell is very invigorating, but the feeling is even more so.

Tea Tree

Bet you weren’t expecting to find this one on the list, huh? Believe it or not, tea tree oil does more than kill germs! Tea tree oil also stimulates white blood cells to do their thing, which aid in faster healing.

tea tree essential oil

I highly recommend tea tree oil if you have a sensitive scalp or dandruff that refuses to leave. It’s true that the other oils I’ve mentioned so far help with scalp health, but tea tree is slightly less intense.

It’s still on the invigorating side, but tea tree is gentler and one of the best for dealing with sensitive or inflamed skin. Think of it this way: if you want to make your hair grow faster while also healing your scalp, this is the best oil for you!

Cinnamon

Yet another great stimulant for your scalp, cinnamon essential oil will do more than make your house smell like fall! It has a slightly warming sensation when applied to the skin, instead of the cooling or invigorating feelings caused by previous oils.

cinnamon essential oil

This spicy essential oil also helps with fungus. Did you know that dandruff can happen due to certain types of fungus on your scalp? If you clear the fungus with cinnamon essential oil, then your dandruff will fade away while your hair can grow as long as it wants.

Since cinnamon is a more intense essential oil, please follow essential oil safety guidelines when applying! If you keep your volume at 20% of your carrier oil, you should be fine. Just be aware that the warming sensation is what makes your hair grow.

Eucalyptus

We’re cooling things down again with one of my favorite invigorating essential oils. Eucalyptus essential oil is best known for clearing your sinuses, but it can also improve circulation to your scalp.

eucalyptus essential oil

And not only that, but eucalyptus is great for improving the health of your existing hair! The nutrients from this plant help create hair that is not only thicker, but noticeably shiny as well. If you’re looking to improve dull hair while growing it out, eucalyptus is a great option!

I love to put a few drops of eucalyptus in all my hair oil concoctions because who doesn’t want healthier looking hair? Not to mention the smell of it always lifts my mood and makes me feel more awake when I’m done getting ready for the day.

Pine

While this essential oil certainly has an invigorating effect, it’s not the selling point. Pine essential oil is excellent for hair growth because it’s rich in vitamin E, which is fantastic for helping you reach your hair goals.

pine essential oil

Pine essential oil is also rich in proteins, which makes it a great option for thinning hair or hair loss. You’ll often find pine essential oil in just about any shampoo meant for hair regrowth, it’s that good!

I highly recommend you add pine oil to your hair growth serum if you’re experiencing hair loss or poor quality of hair in general. It’s truly a miracle worker out of all these essential oils for hair growth!

Peppermint

Ah, good ole peppermint oil. Not only does it smell amazing, it’s also great for preventing hair loss. The menthol content in peppermint oil is what does all the magical goodness for hair growth.

peppermint essential oil

Although it’s only been studied recently, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that peppermint essential oil does indeed promote hair growth while nurturing the health of existing hair. Scientists still aren’t convinced, but the evidence they’re gathering looks promising.

Keep in mind that peppermint oil will cause a very intense cooling sensation on your scalp. I’ve personally felt it in Innersense’s Scalp Scrub, where peppermint oil is one of the main ingredients. If it feels too intense, add a bit more carrier oil to take the edge off.

Cedarwood

This woodsy-smelling essential oil is another great option for shedding and hair loss because it’s a master at scalp health. Cedarwood oil can balance the oil-producing glands and help them produce the right amount of oil, instead of too much.

cedarwood essential oil

I know I could use a good cedarwood treatment right about now! I’ve had oily hair for as long as I can remember. Just keep in mind that your scalp won’t be healed after one use.

Cedarwood essential oil is also antifungal and antibacterial, which can help clear us any dandruff issues that may be hindering your hair growth. If you have an overactive scalp, or a scalp that feels congested, cedarwood is a must for your hair oil!

Clove

Last but not least is lovely clove essential oil! It promotes hair growth when a compound called eugenol is absorbed into your roots. It cleans out the follicles while improving circulation, which creates the perfect environment for better hair growth.

clove essential oil

When applied regularly, clove oil also adds a great amount of shine to the hair shaft that can last for a long time. Your hair will be thicker and noticeably healthier!

Since clove is also a warming essential oil, you may feel a slight burning sensation when applying for the first time. It might take some trial and error but applying more carrier oil should help calm the burning if it becomes too much.

Final Thoughts on Essential Oils for Hair Growth

No matter what essential oil you decide to pick, any of these options should considerably increase your hair growth. You can pick two or even three to give your hair a makeover from dull and lifeless to shiny and strong.

Just make sure that you follow proper safety precautions and apply these essential oils for hair growth with a carrier oil! Seriously, a lot of these oils are pretty invigorating, and might burn your skin upon contact. Just use a carrier oil like jojoba oil to take down its potency.
