Are Sugar Scrubs Good for Your Skin?

Absolutely! The granules of sugar are fine enough that they can buff away the dead skin without leaving it feeling raw. Add in the moisture from nourishing oils and special pumpkin spice blend, and your skin will be in heaven!

There are several ways you can go about making your own pumpkin spice sugar scrub with essential oils, but this recipe has the most benefits for skin care and overall wellness. There are two main ingredients to this recipe: Oils and sugars. That’s it!

Using essential oils and certain kinds of sugars will turn this sugar scrub into a skin healing session that I’m sure we could all use this time of year. Not to mention the aromatherapy is incredible!

What is the Best Sugar to Use in a Scrub?

While you can totally use the white sugar in your pantry, you can take it one step further if you’re feeling fancy. Using raw organic sugar will elevate your sugar scrub experience for several reasons.

One, raw sugar still has much of its original minerals preserved in it. White sugar has all its extra minerals processed out of it. We’re all a little mineral deficient, and your skin is your biggest organ.

Using raw sugar in this pumpkin spice sugar scrub will give your whole body a much-needed boost of minerals, and your body will thank you for it!

This is one of the main things I recommend you try that will make this pumpkin spice sugar scrub so amazing. It’s true that you could make your own basic sugar scrub recipe and simply add pumpkin pie spice to it for that pumpkin spice scent, but it’s so easy to go the extra mile! All it takes is a pumpkin spice essential oil blend.

The Best Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend

I’ll tell you the secret ingredient: It’s this special blend from REVIVE Essential Oils called PSL! This essential oil blend is seriously one of my favorite things about fall.

If you haven’t heard of REVIVE, you’re seriously missing out if you love essential oils! I have a review on REVIVE that goes through all the juicy details.

It smells like all the goodness of this time of year without the synthetic sugar rush. PSL is a complex blend of clove, coffee, sweet orange, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, and a lot more! The result is a smell like a fall coffee shop.

If you’re in a pinch, you can totally use pumpkin pie spice in this sugar scrub for a similar fall effect, but this is the real deal! Not to mention all these essential oils create a fantastic healing sensation for your skin.

Almost all the oils in this blend help with bringing life back to the skin by stimulating light amounts of blood flow. This will keep your skin look young, firm, and supple. They also help keep you healthy by providing antibacterial properties!

You Can’t Forget Nourishing Carrier Oils!

REVIVE also sells carrier oils that provide the bulk of the restorative moisture in this pumpkin spice sugar scrub. There are several you can choose from!

Just make sure that you pick one with a light  or no scent, so it doesn’t overpower the pumpkin spice. There are all kinds of sugar scrub scents to pick from, but you don’t want it to come from your carrier oil!

My personal favorite carrier oil is jojoba oil because it mimics your skin’s oils very closely. It’s also very light, which means that your skin will absorb it quickly without you feeling greasy later. I even recommend it in my easy DIY lotion recipe!

There are plenty of other carrier oils to pick from, like avocado and sweet almond oils. I made this batch with avocado oil because that’s all that my store had at the time. And no worries if you don’t have time to buy online, you can easily find carrier oils at any store that carries essential oils.

Can You Put Vanilla Extract in Sugar Scrub?

Of course! There’s nothing wrong with putting your favorite extract in your sugar scrubs! I think adding vanilla extract would be a great way to elevate this into a vanilla pumpkin spice sugar scrub because it would smell like a lovely fall bakery.

You can go as crazy or as simple as you want with DIY sugar scrub recipes. How you dress it up is your choice. I’ll include vanilla extract in the amounts given for the recipe below. But again, it’s totally up to you.

If this is a pumpkin spice sugar scrub is a gift, I would include it or leave it out depending on how much of a sweet tooth this person has. Now let’s move on to the recipe!

DIY Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub

This pumpkin spice sugar scrub combines all the goodness of fall without the synthetic sugar! Not to mention you'll buff away all the dead skin to reveal glowing, moisturized skin.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Active Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Difficulty Easy

Instructions

    1. Combine your white and brown sugars in your desired glass container. Pour in your carrier oil and mix well.

    2. Add in your pumpkin spice latte blend and optional vanilla extract and give it one more stir to make sure everything is evenly mixed.

    3. Dress up your sugar scrub with a cute ribbon and enjoy!

Notes

Once you have your sugars and oils mixed together, you can add more sugar or oils to get your desired consistency. I like to have my sugar scrubs at a more sandy consistency, so I'll usually add just a tad more sugar before finishing.

How to Use This Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub

To use your fancy new sugar scrub, take a small amount and gently rub in circular motions while in the shower. I love to use it on my legs as shaving cream!

Shave or rinse off the sugar scrub and continue showering as normal. Your skin will be soft and glowing afterward, and you’ll feel renewed from that nice aromatherapy session!

I personally like to use any sugar scrub when I’m in the shower because there’s minimal mess to clean up. I’ve seen some people sugar up before showering, so you do you.

You’re also more than welcome to use this pumpkin spice sugar scrub as a hand treatment! Just rub a small amount all over your hands and rinse off in the sink. It’s a refreshing way to give your skin an extra boost of moisture during the winter months.

Final Thoughts on This DIY Pumpkin Spice Scrub

While I’m not a big pumpkin spice latte fan, I’m also not a coffee fan either. But I love the idea of Fall having its own flavor because it helps us get in the spirit of things and ring in the second half of the year.

This DIY pumpkin spice sugar scrub is the perfect way to celebrate the coming of Fall without all the added caffeine and fake sugar! Yeah, I know that this recipe involves a huge amount of sugar, but you aren’t ingesting any of it. You’re actually using the sugar as a fun little boost for some much-needed skin care.

The latter half of the year can be crazy with get-togethers and way too many cheat meals, so it’s important that you take some time for yourself with some self-care. It doesn’t matter how you do it! If it looks like some extra time in the shower buffing out your legs and breathing in that pumpkin spice goodness, then go for it!
